I’m using my experiences with these leading OTA DVRs on the market to benchmark the ZapperBox M1. I have also used a number of other OTA DVRs from HDHomeRun, and Tablo. I connected the ZapperBox M1 to the same outdoor TV antenna that I regularly use with a HDHomeRun Extend. If you’re an enthusiast of over-the-air TV who is eager to check out NextGen TV, the ZapperBox is a pretty good starting point. In fact, you may not be able to tell the difference between 1080i on the current digital TV standard, and 1080p airing on NextGen TV.įor now, most people are still using digital broadcasts to watch local ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and FOX stations with a TV antenna. So far, NextGen TV stations have only been transmitting up to 1080p.Īnd it’s worth noting that current digital TV signals that air in 720p and 1080i look very good when you have decent antenna reception. NextGen TV is a ways off from living up to its potential. While the current standard (ATSC 1.0) isn’t expected to go away anytime soon, NextGen TV is capable of transmitting ultra-high-definition 4K video, HDR formats and immersive audio. ![]() It’s also known as ATSC 3.0, or the latest version of the Advanced Television Systems Committee standards. NextGen TV is the latest broadcast standard that is being adopted by local TV stations. Overall, ZapperBox shows promise, but would benefit from further development. The single-tuner unit is priced at $249.95, while the dual-tuner costs $274.95. But, the effectiveness of NextGen TV remains to be seen. It features a user-friendly channel guide and offers the option to stream YouTube. ZapperBox now supports digital rights management (DRM), allowing users to watch and record DRM-encrypted broadcast channels. Broadcasters have responded to the trend by making more programming available on streaming services in tandem with their debut on linear, over-the-air channels.The ZapperBox M1 over-the-air (OTA) DVR delivers solid picture quality from local NextGen TV channels and the current digital over-the-air standard called ATSC 1.0. While many households have switched from cable and satellite toward broadcast and streaming, recently released data from research firm Nielsen indicates more people are choosing streaming services over broadcast to satiate their television appetite. TiVo, a subsidiary of Xperi best known for its digital video records (DVRs), continues to sell DVRs aimed at cord-cutters, but has otherwise shifted its business priority to its forthcoming TiVo Stream operating system. Just two companies - SiliconDust of Arizona and Canada-based Nuvvyo - manufacture over-the-air devices ( Tablo and HDHomeRun) that stream broadcast content to smartphones, tablets and smart TV devices. The departure of the Fire TV Recast leaves few options on the market for cord-cutters who want to stream live and recorded broadcast television. It was not compatible with other streaming platforms like Roku or Apple TV. The device allows a person to stream broadcast channels to smart TVs and streaming sticks running Amazon’s Fire TV operating system, and includes an internal hard drive for users who want to record broadcast shows. ![]() Amazon says it will continue providing software updates to existing Fire TV Recast devices through at least 2026.Īmazon first introduced the Fire TV Recast in 2014. Over the weekend, Amazon-focused blog AFTV News first reported the company appeared to be moving away from the devices. “Many of the features offered by the Recast are now available through other apps on Fire TV, and we are focusing our efforts and resources on other Fire TV devices and services that provide great value to our customers.” “We are constantly evaluating our product and service offerings to best serve the evolving needs of our customers,” an Amazon spokesperson told TechHive. On Monday, the technology website TechHive confirmed the discontinuation of the Amazon Fire TV Recast, a $230 streaming box that included a TV tuner capable of decoding and streaming free, over-the-air television.
